Introduction

Navigating the world of mental health can be overwhelming, especially when you're not sure where to start. At Behavioral Health Consulting Solutions (BHCS), we've designed an assessment process that's not just comprehensive but also patient friendly. In this blog post, we'll walk you through our unique approach, breaking down each step so you know exactly what to expect.

A Mixed Methods Approach to Assessment

One of the standout features of our assessment process is its resemblance to a mixed methods research study. We blend quantitative data (numerical scores from assessment tools) with qualitative data (your personal experiences and symptoms) to form a comprehensive understanding of your mental health. Additionally, our Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs) conduct an extensive literature review to ensure that your diagnosis is aligned with the latest scientific research. This multi-faceted approach enables us to provide the most accurate and personalized assessment possible.

Two Systems for Seamless Communication

Before diving into the assessment process, it's important to note that we use two systems to deliver new patient forms and assessment tools:

  • EHR Simple Practice: Some of your initial paperwork will be sent via email through this system.
  • Seidr: Our proprietary Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) platform sends most of the assessment tools and history forms via email and text message.

Completing the forms on both platforms prior to your first appointment is crucial for a smooth assessment process.

The Four-Appointment Journey

1. Pre-Assessment Appointment

Your journey with us starts with a Pre-Assessment Appointment. Before this appointment, you'll receive new patient paperwork and assessment tools via the two systems mentioned above.

During this appointment, our Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs) will:

  • Review your health, mental health, and medication histories.
  • Discuss your lifestyle behaviors like diet and nicotine use.
  • Explore your developmental history and sensory concerns.
  • Address the reason for your referral and symptoms that are most important to you.

2. Clinician Test Administration Appointment

Sometimes, the complexity of your case may require our BHCs to delve deeper into research. This is a separate appointment where the BHC reviews your data and cross-references it with current peer-reviewed literature. You won't need to attend this appointment; it's all behind-the-scenes work to ensure you get the best care possible.

3. Assessment Appointment

About a week after your pre-assessment, you'll have the Assessment Appointment. Here, the BHC will:

  • Go through specific diagnostic criteria with you.
  • Collect qualitative data to understand how symptoms manifest in your life.
  • Compare this data with your quantitative data, health histories, and current research to determine a diagnosis.

After this, you'll receive an after-assessment summary and information on your diagnosis to review.

4. Post-Assessment and Three-Month Follow-Up Appointments

The Post-Assessment Appointment focuses on assessing your understanding of your diagnosis. The BHC will answer any questions you may have and use scaling questions to gauge your health literacy.

For those not in ongoing counseling with us, we offer a Three-Month Follow-Up Appointment. This allows us to ensure you're responding well to treatment or offer additional support if needed.

Conclusion

At BHCS, we're committed to providing you with the most comprehensive and patient-friendly assessment process. Our multi-step approach ensures that we get a full picture of your mental health needs, allowing us to provide you with the most effective treatment plan.
